Branding Ourselves

I recently came across an archived article from Fast Company's August 1997 issue. My first thought was how outdated this article about "branding" would be. After all, it was written 10 years ago. The article titled "A Brand Called You" was actually SO relevant to today's world and the "age of the individual". It reminded me of Time Magazine's award for person of the year as YOU and how the Internet has made such contributions to today's society. Don Hinchcliffe made a very interesting post on Time's award in his blog on Social Computing magazine. There is a whole notion in the Fast Company about branding ourselves to be the CEO of Me Inc. In general, Fast Company is known to be a great resource for career advice and as I will be looking for jobs soon ;) the concept of thinking of my own brand is exciting. What makes someone who they are and what is it they might stand for? When you walk out of an interview, how would you like to be remembered? What is one thing that is specific to only you, as a brand? All questions to think about...

Elise,

1: Thanks for fixing the "comments issue". Still annoyed at BlogSpot that I now have to put my blog into the message rather than it allowing me to enter it into the "who wrote this comment" stuff, but that's not your fault :-)

2: What I originally wanted to say, was that I'd strongly recommend you subscribe to the feed at www.tompeters.com - Tom is the author of the Branding Ourselves article, and also the world's best-selling business author.

Although it's not about PR specifically, but more generally about business, I'd recommend his books "Re-imagine" (longer), or "The Brand You 50" (shorter, pocketsize) as a great place to move beyond this article.

No connection to Tom other than as a raving fan of his for the last 15 years :-)
